The Flute of Orpheus

You who held the world in sway,
In the arms of thy magical refrain,
Which made pearls in drops of rain...
And wherein the blissful cradle lay...

You whose flute hath an exotic way,
That moved Persephone with its strain...
And revived beloved Eurydice slain...
From the underworld of Hades' play...

Thy spirit, Orpheus - lost it lies...
Taken by Maenads in a time bygone,
Issues of devil, halos who don...

The song of life, now hath cries...
Words are dead and gallows spawn,
Ahoy to this night, without a dawn...

Legend of Orpheus

Petrarch: "I counted the lines and can see the 8+6 formation which makes it a sonnet but why does the meter sound familiar???"

Me: "Thats because the meter is abba-abba cdd-cdd... which makes it a Petrarchan Sonnet!"
